Last month, Home Kong Kitchen‘s youngest volunteers (aged 7-16) sewed stunning wash bags for the homeless using recycled cotton, which we filled with amenities and delivered to the homeless via ImpactHK. The project was a response to discovering Hong Kong provides excellent public shower facilities for the homeless, but no amenities like shampoo and soap. It was hands down our cutest project yet and we received a touching response from our homeless friends. This month, our homeless friends are facing a fresh challenge as the government has imposed using the Leave Home Safe app for entry to all government buildings, including public showers.
Most homeless do not have mobile phones. The few that do don’t have handsets capable of running the Leave Home Safe app. This leaves the majority of homeless unable to access public showers. We are therefore imploring our incredible community to donate old mobile phones to us that we can distribute to street sleepers with the necessary app already downloaded for ease of use. Being able to take a shower is not only important for a homeless person’s health and hygiene, it is also a vital first step towards improving self-esteem and helping them to transform their lives. If you are thinking about upgrading your mobile/ cellphone this Christmas and/ or have an old handset you no longer use that is capable of running the Leave Home Safe app, we would LOVE to help you make a homeless person appy this festive season!
Throughout the winter months ahead, we will be collecting phones as well as bread and other gifts for our homeless friends. As always, Home Kong Kitchen is determined to make donating easy and is happy to collect from your home, workplace or a convenient drop-off point anywhere in Hong Kong.
